He noted that representatives from Washington and Minsk discussed international issues, bilateral relations, and other topics of mutual interest. The result of the negotiations was a sort of "interim agreement." ### Possible New Releases Cole reported that the negotiations will continue. If the parties manage to resolve the remaining issues, new prisoner releases and the lifting of American sanctions on other Belarusian enterprises may follow. On Tuesday, the American special envoy met with Alexander Lukashenko. Before his trip to Belarus, Cole visited Vilnius, where he held talks with Lithuanian Foreign Minister Kęstutis Budrys. One of the topics of the meeting was the efforts to release political prisoners in Belarus, as well as the security situation in the region. At the end of August, Cole stated that as a result of interactions with Minsk, the US had already achieved the release of 500 prisoners. About 200 more people, according to him, were released based on Lukashenko's pardons. The current agreement indicates the continuation of contacts between Washington and Minsk based on the principle of mutual steps: the release of prisoners is accompanied by the easing of American sanctions. However, the agreement is still interim, and further decisions will depend on the results of the negotiations.
