High blood pressure requires monitoring and, if necessary, therapy prescribed by a doctor. At the same time, diet also plays a certain role. As Health.com writes, one of the drinks potentially beneficial for people with hypertension is beet juice. ## Why beet juice? The main advantage of beets is their high content of natural nitrates. According to dietitian Avery Zenker, the body converts these compounds into nitric oxide, which helps maintain normal blood vessel function. This, in turn, can contribute to better blood pressure control. Dietitian Carlin Remedios notes that studies involving adults with hypertension have shown a moderate reduction in systolic blood pressure with regular consumption of nitrates from beets. On average, this reduction was about **3–4 mm Hg** in studies lasting up to two months. In addition, beet juice contains antioxidants and potassium. The latter helps regulate sodium balance in the body, which is also important for maintaining normal blood pressure. ## How to drink it Beet juice can be consumed on its own; however, its characteristic earthy taste is not liked by everyone. In this case, dietitians suggest adding it to smoothies or mixing it with a small amount of apple or citrus juice. Another option is to freeze the juice in ice cube trays and then add the cubes to other drinks or smoothies. At the same time, one should not rely on beet juice as a standalone remedy for hypertension. It can only be part of a balanced diet that includes enough vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and legumes. Beet juice can indeed be a helpful addition to the diet for high blood pressure: the nitrates it contains promote the formation of nitric oxide and may help blood vessels relax. But the effect remains moderate, so it cannot replace medications prescribed by a doctor.
