In less than an hour, the Cabinet of Ministers will gather for its last meeting before the Saeima elections. Interior Minister Janis Dombrova attempted to initiate the consideration of his latest initiative at the coalition council just before the government meeting, which he himself announced on social media: "I am submitting a draft decision to suspend visa issuance for citizens of Uzbekistan. After several citizens of Uzbekistan committed crimes shortly after arriving in Latvia, including against minors, the Ministry of the Interior proposed today at the government meeting to make a decision to suspend visa issuance for citizens of Uzbekistan based on part 2 of article 8 of the Immigration Law. While visa issuance is suspended, we will work together with the Uzbek side to prevent the arrival of individuals who pose risks to public order and safety." However, coalition partners suggested not to rush into discussing such a ban. Thus, this issue will not appear on the agenda of today’s government meeting. "We hope that the issue of suspending visa issuance will be considered at the next Cabinet meeting," the interior minister expressed hope.
