**What is remembered in the Church on October 3, 2026** The future saint lived in the 1st century and was an outstanding general in Rome under Emperor Trajan. He was then named Placidus, was wealthy, powerful, at the height of glory, yet this did not make him insensitive. He was always kind to others, empathized with the sorrows of others, and tried in every way to help people. He came to Christianity after witnessing a miracle while hunting. Once, Placidus became so engrossed in chasing a deer that he rushed into the thicket. There, he saw a shining cross with a crucifixion between the animal's antlers, and then he heard a voice: “Why do you pursue the one who wishes you salvation?” Upon returning home, he, along with his wife and two children, accepted baptism. At baptism, he received the name Eustathius, his wife the name Theoplistia, and his sons Agapius and Theoctistus. Later, his wife and children were also canonized. At that time, numerous misfortunes befell the newly baptized Eustathius and his family — thieves stole all his wealth, cattle were taken away, his wife was abducted by criminals, one son was seized by a lion, and the other by a wolf. But Eustathius humbly endured all hardships and did not complain. During this time, Trajan began another war and summoned his valiant general to Rome to lead the troops. Naturally, he could not refuse the ruler. He began the campaign with all possible vigor. His troops advanced, and during the march, he found his wife in one of the villages, and later among his troops, he found his sons. The war ended in complete victory. The army, led by Eustathius, returned to Rome. There, the emperor wished to celebrate this with a solemn sacrifice. But Eustathius categorically refused to bow to the pagan gods. The emperor was enraged; despite all of Eustathius's merits, he was stripped of his rank. Then he and his entire family were subjected to a martyr's death. **The Meaning of the Holiday** No earthly merits lead to the Lord, only faith and prayer. **Folk Weather Signs** — Wind from the north — to a quick cold snap, from the south — to warming.
