Two municipal employees were killed in the German town of Berngau during a routine check of firearms belonging to a local resident, reports LETA citing DPA. The incident occurred on Thursday afternoon. Officials from the Neumarkt district came to inspect the firearms of a 60-year-old man and the compliance with storage regulations. It was a routine check — there were no plans to confiscate the weapons from the owner. The reason why the man opened fire on the arriving officials is still unknown. A 45-year-old municipal employee sustained a fatal injury. Initially, it was reported that his 54-year-old colleague was seriously injured, but later police confirmed her death as well. "We believe she died immediately after the shots were fired," said a police representative, referring to the circumstances of the body’s discovery. After the shooting, the suspect barricaded himself in the house. The body of the deceased woman had to be carried out of the building while the man was still inside. The standoff lasted several hours. Throughout this time, police maintained phone contact with the suspect, with communication occurring in both directions. It was only on Friday morning that the 60-year-old man was apprehended. During the operation, he sustained a minor gunshot wound to his leg. Now the investigation must establish the motive for the attack. At this time, police emphasize that the visit by municipal officials was related to a planned firearms check and storage conditions, rather than an attempt to confiscate them.
