The action of the new film will take place in the 1990s. Viewers can expect a love story featuring a new generation of characters, while still maintaining a connection to the original film: Jennifer Grey will reprise her role as Frances Houseman, known to fans of the movie as Baby. One of the main questions remained the fate of Patrick Swayze's character — the charismatic dance instructor Johnny Castle. After the actor's death in 2009, there was discussion about the possibility of digitally recreating him using modern technology. However, the producer of the sequel, Nina Jacobson, categorically ruled out such an option during the IndieWire summit "The Future of Filmmaking 2026." According to her, the filmmakers do not intend to bring Swayze back to the screen using artificial intelligence. Instead, they aim to find a delicate way to pay tribute to the actor and allow viewers to relive the emotions associated with his character. At the same time, details on how exactly the absence of Johnny Castle will be reflected in the plot have not yet been disclosed. Jacobson also emphasized that the creators' task is not just to replicate the success of the original film, but to convey its atmosphere. In the producer's opinion, "Dirty Dancing" was not only a beautiful love story but also a film that was quite bold for its time, addressing complex social issues. Jennifer Grey plays a special role in creating the sequel, participating in the project not only as an actress but also as a producer. Her understanding of Baby's character and the reasons for the film's long-standing popularity should help connect the new story with the original. It is worth noting that "Dirty Dancing" was released in 1987. The romantic story of a girl from a wealthy family and a dance instructor became a global hit. With a budget of about $6 million, the film grossed approximately $214 million. The song "(I've Had) The Time of My Life," which played in the finale, won an Oscar. Plans to make a sequel were officially announced back in 2022. However, the project is still in development. The premiere date has not been announced, the director has not yet been confirmed, and the full cast remains unknown. Thus, fans of "Dirty Dancing" will have to wait for Baby's return to the big screen. But it is already clear that the new film will try to preserve the romance of the original without resorting to the digital resurrection of its main star.
