From time to time, someone from the nationalists opens the website of the American diplomatic mission and experiences shock. After which, they write a protest post on platform X. This is where it ends – until the next shocking "discovery." Today, Liana Langa, a member of the Riga City Council, was unpleasantly surprised, having recently given up her dream of becoming a member of the Saeima. The lady addressed an open letter to the US Ambassador to Latvia, Melissa Argiros: "Your Excellency, the RunāLatviski campaign would like to draw your attention to the fact that the language of the Russian Federation is featured on your embassy's website — a language that holds no official status in Latvia. By doing so, you demonstrate to the entire world that Latvia is a part of Russia. However, this is not the case. In Turaida, which you recently visited, the Russian language has historically never been spoken. We strongly urge you to remove the Russian language from the embassy's website!" The US Embassy ignored the deputy's demands. And not just the embassy – within 10 hours, there was not a single comment on the appeal. No one was willing to quarrel with the Americans, especially with wealthy Americans. It is worth noting that Melissa is the daughter of George Argiros, an American billionaire, real estate investor, and former US Ambassador to Spain and Andorra. Her candidacy was nominated by President Donald Trump. The US Senate confirmed her on December 18, 2025. Argiros belongs to the category of political appointees rather than career diplomats.
