International experts warn that the situation may worsen even further in the coming months. "The threat of famine in the coming months requires immediate action. We cannot afford to waste time if we want to save lives and prevent hunger," states a joint declaration. Particular concern is raised about the situation of children. Without urgent measures, the number of children suffering from severe acute malnutrition could exceed the projected 825,000. Additionally, the number of regions in the country affected by the food crisis is expected to double. **The War Has Claimed Over 200,000 Lives** The armed conflict in Sudan has been ongoing since April 2023. The opposing sides are the Sudanese Armed Forces and the paramilitary group Rapid Support Forces (RSF). According to humanitarian organizations, over 200,000 people have died during the fighting, and more than 13 million have been forced to leave their homes. As a result, Sudan has found itself at the center of one of the largest humanitarian crises of modern times, accompanied by mass displacement and acute food shortages. **Latvia Joined the International Call** The signatory states demanded that the opposing sides remove all obstacles to the delivery of humanitarian aid. They called for humanitarian organizations to be granted full, safe, rapid, and unhindered access to those in need, as well as to ensure the protection of humanitarian mission staff. A total of 31 states, including Latvia, Estonia, the USA, the UK, France, Germany, Canada, Australia, and Poland, have joined the statement, while Lithuania is not among the signatories. The international community warns: without urgent expansion of humanitarian aid, the food crisis in Sudan could lead to further increases in casualties, particularly among the most vulnerable groups of the population.
