The microwave has become an indispensable appliance in the kitchen. It is convenient: just place a plate of food inside, close the lid, and in 1-2 minutes everything is ready. However, not all foods are suitable for reheating in the microwave. Why? The answer is simple. If used incorrectly, the microwave can create conditions for the proliferation of pathogenic microorganisms, destroy vitamin C, alter dietary fibers, and even lead to the explosion or ignition of food. In this article, we will take a detailed look at which foods should not be reheated in the microwave. Processed Meats Processed meats contain many preservatives and chemicals that help maintain their appearance. When defrosted in the microwave, these substances can release oxidized cholesterol, which is undesirable for health as it can cause cardiovascular diseases. Eggs Boiled or raw eggs in their shells can explode when heated in the microwave. This happens due to rapid heating, which creates steam inside the shell. When the pressure becomes too high, the shell cannot withstand it, resulting in an "egg explosion." If you want to cook eggs in the microwave, crack them into a plate before placing them in the microwave.   Grapes Grapes should not be heated in the microwave. Due to their shape and size, the berries quickly absorb microwaves, which can lead to their ignition or explosion. Foods in Containers Not all containers are suitable for reheating in the microwave. Some of them have metal elements that can act like foil when heated. Meat and Fish Raw meat and fish contain harmful bacteria. Defrosting in the microwave creates conditions for their proliferation. For safe defrosting of meat and fish, use a bowl of hot water or transfer frozen products from the freezer to the refrigerator in advance. Beets Cooking beets in the microwave is not recommended, as this vegetable contains nitrates that become carcinogenic at high temperatures.   Milk and Dairy Products To properly reheat dairy products and preserve their beneficial properties, it is better to use a water bath. When heated in the microwave, beneficial substances disappear from milk, and 90% of vitamins evaporate. Although reheated dairy products in the microwave will not cause poisoning, they will also not provide any benefits. Boiled Potatoes Reheating potatoes in the microwave is not recommended, as microwaves affect the structure of starch, leading to the formation of heavy isomers that are difficult to digest. Prepared Chicken Dishes Chicken dishes contain a lot of protein, the structure of which changes under the influence of microwave waves. Consuming such altered protein can cause stomach disorders. It is recommended to reheat chicken meat on an electric or gas stove to preserve its beneficial properties. Breast Milk Heating breast milk in the microwave can destroy immune-stimulating proteins, reducing its benefits. Additionally, the milk may heat unevenly, which is dangerous for an infant.   Grain Porridge and Rice Dishes Reheating grain porridge in the microwave can lead to the formation of carcinogenic substances that extract beneficial components from the mucous membrane of the gastrointestinal tract. Natural Honey Honey does not tolerate high temperatures. When heated above 40 °C, 80% of its important properties are lost. It is best to melt honey in a water bath. Prepared Vegetable Dishes During the initial heat treatment of vegetables, some vitamins are lost. When reheated in the microwave, the food can become useless or even dangerous. Mushrooms Reheating mushrooms in the microwave is dangerous due to their high protein content. Reheating can lead to the formation of altered protein, which is harmful to the intestines. Regularly ignoring this advice can lead to stomach disorders. Hot Peppers Hot peppers can explode or catch fire in the microwave. Capsaicin, contained in the pepper, turns into an aerosol when heated, which can burn the skin.
